TREKKING IN TIBET-THE ROOF OF THE WORLD
A land as vast and mountainous as Tibet offers almost unlimited potential for walkers. From the frigid northern plains to the steamy jungles of the south-east, Tibet is a land of rich cultural and ecological contrasts. The remoteness of Tibet combined with its climatic extremes poses special challenges for trekkers, as well as unique rewards. There are few places left in the world where you can walk for days, witnessing an ancient and sophisticated culture, without having the experience marred by the dross of modern civilization.
In the 17th Century Jesuit priests intent on spreading Christianity trekked over the mountains of western Tibet. In the late 19th and early 20th centuries a slew of spies, explorers and scholars, ofern in caravans, covered great distances on foot in their attempts to reach the Holy city, Lhasa.
Most never made it, and some paid for their Tibetan adventure with their lives. One such unfortunate person was Dutreuil De Rhins, the leader of a French expedition, who in 1891, after being refused permission to enter Lhasa, was murdered by brigands. One the greatest treks was made by George Roerich¡¯s central Asiatic expedition in the 1920s. During their archaeological explorations they traversed a great swathe of Tibet¡¯s northern plains. Still, there were many places that the early explorers didn¡¯t reach, and there are still many new frontiers in Tibet beckoning the experienced, well-equipped trekker.-------Lonely Planet
